U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS POWERPLANT AND LEWIS AND CLARK VISITOR CENTER
The man-made, earth filled Gavins Point Dam created Lewis and Clark Lake in 1955 by the impoundment of the mighty Missouri River. Power production from the Gavins Point Powerplant began in 1957. Since that time the powerplant has generated approximately $10 million of energy each year and has provided for millions more in flood protection, navigation support, recreation, water quality and supply, and fish and wildlife enhancement. Gavins Point Powerplant and Lewis and Clark Visitor Center are 4 miles west of Yankton on SD Highway 54 or 4 miles west on NE Highway 121. Free powerplant tours are offered daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, between 10 A.M. and 5 P.M. The visitor center is also open daily from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M. from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with varying off-season hours. Enjoy the interactive exhibits which explain the history of the Missouri River and the Corps of Engineers. Visit the bookstore, prairie garden, and the Lewis and Clark Trail interpretive walk. For more information, call (402) 667-7873. In Yankton (402) 667-7873.

MERIDIAN BRIDGE
Before you leave downtown, drive over and back, or at least take a look at our Meridian Bridge at Second and Walnut Streets. Once a toll bridge, it was built by Yankton business persons in 1924 and then donated to the city. The bridge is one of only two of its kind still used today.
